Meow!

Here kitty kitty!

Felis-catus is more commonly known as the domestic cat. Not only are they great companions but, they are also amazing hunters. Cats have been living in close association with humans for at least 3,500 years; the Ancient Egyptians routinely used cats to keep mice, rats, and other rodents away from their grain. It is also believed that cats were sacred to the Egyptian goddess Bastet. 86.4 million Cats are owned in the U.S today.  Out of all the cats in the shelters only 25 percent make it out into good homes.

What can we do to help?

Yes, of course there is the easy answer to that question which would be adoption. Besides the humane society there is also the thecatadoptionteam.org and the oregoncat.org. All are great programs trying to help this problem. One step we can take is on the feral cats around the area. A lot of these cats are unfixed and if the matter stays unattended to it will just add more and more to this ever growing problem. If you have feral cats in your area and wish to take advantage of free or very cheap spay and neutering the feral cat collation is the place to get a hold of. What this group does is they come in trap the cats and they take them in and the feline receives FVRCP (distemper) and rabies vaccines, is flea combed and sprayed, treated for ear mites and has his or her right ear tipped for future identification. Cats that appear to be suffering, as determined by a veterinarian, are tested for feline leukemia (FeLV) and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV): all positives are euthanize  If they check out clean they get taken back to their place that they call home and live their lives out with current shots. Yes, killing them sounds wrong to some extent but, if one of these feral cats came along and they choose to mate with one your cats that haven’t been fixed yet the cat could die as well. If you have any questions or know of feral cats in need please check out....
